Born and reared as a vegetarian at The Knowles Health Hydro and Dietetic Establishment in Hastings I am very eager to at last draw attention to the vegetarian recipes described by my grandmother, a ‘pioneer vegetarian’ in the early twentieth century, and to the Edwardian photographs taken by my grand-father, and the works by a member of the Nabis group of artists in Fin-de-Siecle Paris, my great-uncle. Contact me to book a lecture on James Pitcairn-Knowles.

My osteopathic practice, now fifty years established in Sevenoaks, is now run by my son, giving me time to devote to my neglected grand-parents and great-uncle – they were Mrs A. Pitcairn-Knowles (nee Margaret
Gardner), Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles and James Pitcairn-Knowles. The letters, books, photographs and works of art, written, taken and painted by these three give an amazing insight into their lives in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and it is these that prompted the writing and publication of these books. The entire Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles archive is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum where copies of his Edwardian photographs can be obtained.
